It's Friday! THREE DAY WEEKEND!! WOOOOOOOOOO! My plan for the weekend is to relax, enjoy the weather and try not to let things bother me too much (read: cicadas).
Man, I have been such a bum lately. I think it's cause I dread going outside-- it's a cicada graveyard/watering hole out there. Also, it's my inherent laziness. I gotta work on that. I'm a lazy person, so I really have to work at getting up, being active, not being a bum. I think in my happiest state I am in the apartment, watching tv or reading. That makes me happiest. Unfortunately, that also makes me slothful, so I need to try to get myself out more, enjoy the city and experience life beyond four walls and a red couch.
Oh my goodness Harry Potter 3 comes out next week and it looks SO GOOD. I am freakin' excited about this movie. So excited that I am contemplating going up to New York for the weekend so I can watch it with my fellow fanatics Jess and Tina. Yes, I am nutty. But dammit, I love me my Harry/RON/Hermione.
Lots of crazy things going on. Huge life changes for people around me. It's exciting... and a little freaky! Can't wait to hear the news, and I'm praying like crazy!

Hannah was walking to Borders on her lunch break, minding her own business. She saw all the dead cidadas on the ground, and all the cidadas flying around, and did her very best to avoid them. She shrieked when a cicada narrowly missed her, but overall managed to steer clear. After walking into Borders, grabbing a magazine and sitting down on a ledge near the windwo, she thought she heard a buzzing. She looked up, and realized it was coming from her. Fear began to grip her heart as she reached her hand back to brush hair away from her neck... and then she felt a foreign MOVING object on her hair and shoulder. Panic set in as she realized a CICADA HAD LANDED ON HER HAIR!!!!!! She jumped up with a shriek, wildly trying to fling it out of her while fighting her natural instinct not to touch it. In her frenzy of panic and fear, she dropped both the sandwich she was about to start eating, and the magazine in her lap. It took only a few seconds for the cicada to be flung away, but time stood still during those dark moments, and it felt like years. She ignored the curious stares and knowing smiles of the people around her as she tried to catch her breath and slow her racing heart. Hannah looked around cautiously as she sat back down, and wondered where IT had gone. She looked behind the ledge, and fear once again gripped her heart as she saw IT lying by the window. She was propelled upward and made a beeline towards the opposite end of the ledge, towards safety and cidada-free reading. Her lunch hour, and her mood, was marred by this disgusting interlude however. Hannah had difficulty concentrating, as she continued to feel like cicadas were on her hair, neck, clothes, etc. Their insidious presence left a mark on her psyche, and she vowed never to leave her hair down again, to be constantly aware of the flying menace, and to keep all parts of her body moving at all times while she was outside as to not provide a target for the red-eyed creatures. BLEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. CICADAS ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOO GROSS!!!

I was so engrossed in my I love Jars of Clay rant that I forgot to write about the rest of my weekend. Saturday afternoon Sylvia, Joy and I headed to Old Town Alexandria to walk around. It was bitchin' hot, but it was fun walking around, seeing all the cute shops and eating frozen custard. The water was nice, nice breeze blowing. It was a nice way to spend a Saturday. Then we headed back and popped in Sabrina. Ain't nobody like Audrey Hepburn. Humphrey Bogart was good, but he's so... Humphrey Bogart. I can't explain. I think the perfect Sabrina would be Harris0n Ford and Audrey Hepburn, cause I really liked him in the remake, but I really disliked Julia 0rmond. Hooray for old movies.
Memorial Day weekend is coming up!! YAY! No work on Monday!! YAY! My only goal for the weekend is to stay away from downtown and away from the metro. The World War II memorial is opening this weekend, and I hear that they're expecting something like 800,000 visitors. Oh man. Tourists are a pain in my rear, especially on the metro. "Stand to the Right!!!"

Weekends are AWESOME.
JARS!! Saw Jars of Clay perform on Friday night. Now if you know me at all, you know that I love Jars of Clay, and they are my favorite band ever. I think this was my ninth time seeing them. The only bad thing about the concert was that the concert goers were LAME. It was standing room general admission, and these people were sitting on the floor watching them perform. I just could not sit and watch Jars-- I need to be moving, active, dancing singing when I watch them. So, I stood to the side and sang along and jived my little heart out. Everytime Sylvia looked over at me, she started cracking up. Admittedly, I am nutso at these things, so I am sure I looked ridiculous. I'm sure the band saw me and thought I was a lunatic. But I don't care! Cause it's Jars of Clay, my favorite band ever, and if I'm into it, I'm into it. I wish I could have met them after, cause then I would have told them that they helped me get through college. The only things I could listen to while studying were Jars of Clay and the Rent soundtrack. I think I've listened to all their albums thousands of times.
So yeah. That was my Ode to Jars.

Treebeard Sighting This morning I was walking down I Street, and while I was waiting on the corner of I and 16th, I was held up by a small police motorcade. As the motorcade is passing by I'm thinking, I wonder who it is, maybe it's a Congress thing, or a Cabinet member or dignitary. Then I see through one of the windows that the motorcade is carrying none other than Senator John Kerry, or Treebeard! I thought it was very cool. If I had reacted a little faster, I would have waved furiuosly and tried to make a fool of myself.
James Carville and John Kerry in one week. Living in DC is awesome for political nerds like me :)
West Wing season finale was good. A little confusing and melodramatic, but the acting, of course, was excellent. Man, President Bartlett should have listened to Leo. Cause now he's gonna get his ass kicked by everybody. Also, Law and Order season finale was good, but SAD, cause I heart Lenny. No one can deliver a wry one-liner like Jerry Orbach. The show's just not gonna be the same without him. But it's okay, cause you know you can catch 6 million L&O reruns a day on cable.
By the way-- did yo know that Jerry Orbach was the voice of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast? It's true. Lenny=Lumiere. I think it would have been awesome if they had an episode with Det. Briscoe and Det. Green having to sing for something (Jesse L. Martin was in the original cast of Rent as Tom Collins, so he too can siiiing.) Speaking of ass-kicking singers, I think it would be awesome if they had Jack Bristow singing. Maybe he could go undercover and have to sing somewhere, like Sydney did in Season 1. Did you know that Victor Garber has won a bunch of Tony's, and has been in musicals like Annie, Godspell, Damn Yankees, Assassins, etc? Yep, he's the guy with the big fro in Godspell. I think he played Jesus. Lesson of the day: real men can sing. And be just as comfortable playing spies and detectives as candlesticks and messiahs.
Going to see Jars of Clay tomorrow night! Hooooray! It will be, if I remember correctly, my tenth time seeing them live. Now I just need to find someone to go with. Anyone reading this in the DC area want to come with me to Jars of Clay? Anyone? Anyone?

A useful article from the Chronicle. If you read this blog, hopefully you're my friend. And if you're my friend, you have to VOTE in November. I don't care who you vote for (actually, I do... but that's beside the point), but you have to vote!!! The fact that the election in 2000 was decided by fewer votes than probably an average American Idol week severely depresses me. Do you think our country is in the best place it could be, and living up to all the promise and potential this country could/should stand for? Whatever you think, getting involved is important if this country is going to be the place it could be. So go. I will if you will!

"To preserve the peace of our fellow citizens, promote their prosperity and happiness, reunite opinion, cultivate a spirit of candor, moderation, charity and forbearance toward one another, are objects calling for the efforts and sacrifices of every good man and patriot."
-- Thomas Jefferson
A Patriot's Guide to Political Activism
The din is deafening. How does a small group of individuals effectively gain a voice anymore that rises above the noise?
How is it possible that a million mothers can march on Washington and just a scant few of the political elite bother to take notice? It happened because they marched when Congress was out of session. There are ways, however, for a few patriots or even an individual to take up Jefferson's call and make a difference.
Get Involved with Your Local Political Party: Regardless of which party you belong to, it needs your assistance in registering new voters. It could use help with phone banking at election time, and it never has enough volunteers throughout the year. In California, local party leaders are elected. If your party isn't cutting the mustard, run for a seat on the County Central Committee, the local steering body of your party. Call your local county-elections officials to find out what it takes to run. The process is painless, and, in most communities, you can become an elected official without spending more than $100.
Put the "Party" back in the Party: Throwing a party or get-together at your house is a great way of connecting with people. Small house parties are a great way to meet and support local candidates and connect with like-minded community members.
Start an Issues-Oriented Committee: Start with only five friends, and you could form a powerful group. If, for example, your group is interested in preserving after-school sports programs, start networking with other parent groups, plus schoolteachers and counselors. Pretty soon, you'll need an auditorium to hold your meetings.
Check out Meetup.com: Meetup.com is the Web site that put Howard Dean on the map and got him rolling in the chips. He collected tens of millions of dollars a month in campaign funds, and it all started with a simple grassroots group facilitated by Meetup.com.
It was Will Rogers who famously said, "I don't belong to any organized party. I'm a Democrat." In fact, if group-membership figures on the Meetup.com Web site are any reasonable indication, the Democrats are far better organized than the Republicans. A liberal grassroots group called Democracy for America has 165,000 activist members on Meetup.com, compared to only 24,000 members of Townhall.com, a conservative organization. Similarly the Democratic Party has 52,000 Meetup.com members, compared to a measly 7,700 Republican members on the site.
There are already thousands of groups you can join online; most already meet in a community near you. If they don't, Meetup.com makes it easy for you to get a local group organized. Or, if you don't see an organization that interests you, it enables you to begin one. I just joined an East Bay conservative Meetup.com group, and I'm so happy now that I no longer have to just talk to the wall.
Triangulate: Once you've got your group going, it's a powerful political strategy to triangulate. Create three venues for activism that complement, reinforce and overlap each other. The basics: gatherings of people, media and the Internet.
Build a Media-Friendly Network: For example, if you know of a sympathetic talk-show host, columnist, editor or reporter who cares about your issues, keep him or her in the loop. Develop media contacts. Pretty soon, when you have a big event planned, you may get the publicity you seek. For example, major urban newspapers gave all the details of recent peace marches before they occurred.
Create a Web site: Once you've got your group meeting in a physical location, you'll need a place for them to gather between meetings. A Web site will fill that need and attract new members.
Know Your Enemy: If you just stick around with your own like-minded group, you'll grow stale. Understanding the opposition is basic to learning how to defeat it. To understand the thinking of your opponents is the most fundamental and ancient form of espionage. In this case, read their Web sites and their newspapers and listen to their speakers. If you're conservative, watch CNN, ABC, NBC or CBS for the liberal spin, or listen to NPR or the Pacifica radio stations; you may need a barf bag, but do it. If you're a liberal, watch the Fox News TV network, or, on radio, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh. It may drive you insane -- if you weren't already before you began listening.
Don't Write to Your Congressional Representatives -- Visit Them: Most mail to members of Congress gets tossed straight into the recycling bin. If you're lucky, an aide might count your letter as one of thousands before it's discarded. But don't hold your breath about the possibility that your thoughtfully written letter will even become a statistic.
Members of Congress always say they want to hear from the little people, but they don't. Set up meetings to get in front of their faces. Find out when Congress or the Legislature has its recess. You can then often find your representative in his or her home office. Make an appointment, and then get your Meetup.com group or your issues group to go together. Make your group sound big and important. After all, to you, it is big and important.
Bypass the Media: The media loves to point figures and dish out criticism, but, believe me, they can't take it. The media folks have big egos and thin skins. If a column or news story is inaccurate, or if another major story is simply not getting covered, you can do several things. First, complain; if it's a big newspaper, it might have a reader's representative. Lay out your grievance to the rep clearly. If he or she finds merit in your argument, the rep will make sure your side gets heard. Or, if the paper has no reader rep, take your beef directly to the reporter or an editor.
Also, if you have a unique perspective -- for example, you're a retired colonel and the local military base in your community is closing -- consider writing a guest column. Editors are always looking for guest columnists, and, if you have any expertise or specialized knowledge, you're ahead of the game. Editors seek out intelligent writers, and your column will be prominently read on the opinion pages.
If you think the media is too liberal, you're not alone; check out and join Accuracy in Media or the Media Research Center. If you think it's too conservative, look up Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting or Common Dreams.
Phone Talk-Show Hosts: This is probably the most satisfying of all the instant-gratification media strategies. You get to say what you wish, immediately and unedited. It's exciting, and your viewpoint can reach tens of thousands of minds instantly.
Better yet, if you've got an issue, arrange an expert in the subject to appear on the program as a guest. Call the talk-show host's producer.
Run for Office: In many communities, some elected offices don't require much money for anyone to be a competitive candidate. There are races for school boards, water boards, transportation districts, community-college boards, sanitary districts and so on that control many millions of dollars and can be effective platforms to help you articulate your unique perspective. Check with your local elections official to find out what offices are being contested and what the qualifications are for candidacy.
Support Candidates Who Share Your Stands on Issues: If you don't have the guts, the will power, the interest or the time to run, support candidates who do. Write checks, compose letters to the editor, host coffees in your home and volunteer for campaigns.
Start Your Own Revolution: Several years ago, the City had to cut back the number of police officers in order to finance burgeoning social programs, including health care for the expanding indigent and immigrant population.
A friend of mine decided to do something about it: He single-handedly organized a petition drive to require a minimum number of officers in the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). Eventually, the proposition, known as the Full Force Initiative, got on the ballot and passed. Now, the SFPD has a minimum staffing level. It's amazing that, even in liberal San Francisco, an initiative like that could pass. Apparently, even liberals don't want their heads split open by a thief in the night.
Join and Support a Big, Established Organization: Joining a group that already is taking its fight to the streets is a big plus. If you're so angry that you don't want to sit there and take it anymore, don't. If you're for property rights, consider supporting groups such as the Pacific Legal Foundation, or, for taxpayers' rights, consider the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.
If you're for protecting the legal rights of prisoners locked up at Guantánamo Bay, join the ACLU or if you're against the war in Iraq, check out Indymedia.org. If you want the conservative spin, log on to Lucianne.com or Freerepublic.
If you want to be politically successful, have a plan and carry it out. It can be as complex or as simple as you want; simplicity is sometimes better. It was inventor and genius Thomas Edison who once opined that success is "10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration." That may sound like a bit too much commitment and a lot of work for the novice getting involved in politics, but it was comedian Woody Allen who morphed Edison's timeless wisdom with the opinion that "90 percent of success is just showing up." They're both right
And I'm back! I had a great weekend in Evanston, visiting the old haunts, seeing some cool folk and eating A LOT. Headed in on Thursday night, after being delayed delayed delayed. I have the WORST luck flying to Chicago. Anyways, Friday morning I headed to Chicago with Mel McG to observe MoFo's 4th grade class. Fourth graders are funny. They asked us a lot of questions- "When's your birthday? How old are you? What's your favorite movie? What's your favorite baseball team/ football team/ soccer team/ food/ book/ rapper/ video game/ holiday?" etc. Then I ate lunch at Flat Top Grill. Yummmm. Headed back to Evanston, stopped by Kellogg to say hi, and ate dinner at Thai Sook Dee. Yummmmm. Met up with Art and Jer for drinks, then hung out with Sarah for a while. BTW, my sister is awesome. Saturday morning I stopped by to watch my sister do her Small Group Olympics thing, then I had breakfast with EmilyMueller, who just got engaged! Seriously, her ring is MASSIVE. It's a rock. It was blinding. Hooray for engagements! Bought Sarah lunch, then walked along the lakefill. It was GORGEOUS. I forgot how much I love the Chicago skyline and walking along the lakefill. Met up with Ms. EmmyHong, who just finished her first year of finals, walked around Old Orchard and laughed a lot, then ate at Joy Yee's. Yummmmmm. Saturday night, there was a big DZ reunion. It was awesome. There were a bunch of us there, and we just sat at Prairie Moon and 1800 drinking and laughing. Good times. Went to Vineyard Sunday, and then grabbed lunch at Buff Joe's with Sarah and Pat. Yummmmmm. Then I left. My whole trip basically revolved around food and where I wanted to eat. And it was awesome.
Some observations/interesting things:
-DZ bathrooms are AWESOME. I think all of us alum just about passed out when we saw them. The new TV is pretty awesome too.
-It is WEIRD going back for the first time. It's a place I lived for four years... things are the same, but it's the little things that are different that you notice.
-When people saw me, their reaction was "Hey.... Heeeeeeeeeyy." Took them a bit to realize that it was me, and that me being there was not a normal occurence.
-I'm glad I'm not in college anymore.
-On the flight back, I was three rows behind JamesCarville, MaryMatalin and their kids. When you see JamesCarville, there's absolutely no mistaking that it's JamesCarville. And he has a really distinct voice. MaryMatalin is a little harder to recognize at first, but then there she is. Their kids are cute, and they seemed like fun/funny parents. Some people see famous actors etc. I see famous political people. And that's cool.
Enough of weekend talk. Here are some other things on my mind:
-Harry Potter 3 coming out soon! YAY!!
-Where am I going to live next year???
-It's lonely having the apartment to myself.

DUDE. I just read Byun's blog. Do you hear that? It's the sound of me crying tears of jealousy. I wanna see A.Idol!! By the way, LaToya London was ROBBED. Now Fantasia has to win, cause as much as I love Jasmine, she's no A.Idol, and I extremely extremely dislike D1ana De.Garmo. She's an NTAC (no-talent-ass-clown). But unlike Byun, I heart C1ay A1ken!
Headed to Chicago today. Hollaaa! Can't wait to hang out with my sister, see old friends, congratulate newly engaged friends, and get away from work and DC. Vacations are awesome.
One last thing. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mr. Philip Minsoo Yu and Mr. David Oojeen Han. One's my brother, the other is also pretty much my brother. These two guys have alternately tormented me and made me laugh my ass off since forever. Happy Birthday you guys! Don't go too nuts at Palace Buffet.

I'm going to Evanston this weekend and I'm soooo excited. Why? Because I want to eat myself silly. The whole trip is basically going to revolve around food. Here are some places I MUST eat at:
Thai Sook Dee
Buffalo Joe's
Flat Top Grill
Joy Yee's
I also wouldn't mind eating at Walker Brothers, Jimmy John's, and Chicken Shack.
I'm sitting in the Lower Level Training Room for some lame training. And I'm booooooored. Really booooored.
CICADAS ARE HERE. I'm not going outside for the next month.
Harry Potter is coming out in three weeks! I'm so excited! I might go to New York to watch, or have New York come to me, cause this is the kind of movie you need to watch with other HP fanatics.
I stopped biting my nails and am trying to grow them out. This is a really gross habit I've had since I was a little kid. But it's a really compulsive thing for me. I think it's because I always have a need to be doing something with my hands, and can't sit still. If it's not the biting my nails, it's playing with my hair or fidgeting or tapping something. But I'm trying to grow up and keep my hands still. It's tough. When my nails are pretty and long, I'm giong to get myself a manicure. Hellll yeah.
Life is pretty uneventful right now. I like it like that.

FRIDAY. Thank goodness. This weekend, I am going to be a big pile. It's going to be awesome.
Mother's Day is Sunday. I need to go buy a card. Oooops.
Watched Friends last night. I thought it was good. Loved the chick and duck, loved the "Philange" mention, loved the high fiving the foosball guys, loved the one last "on a break" mention. The babies were cute (but yo-- bringing them home that day? Um... not quite), Chandler and the medallion suggestion was hilarious, Phoebe driving, Ross going nuts, Ross and Rachel getting together-- it was all very cheesy, but very appropriate. Those actors know their characters, and they are great at getting laughs and hitting just the right note. I got a little misty when Chandler and Joey hugged at the end. Overall, I thought it was funny and sweet and ended well.
My favorite Friends episodes are the one where they played the trivia game and their girls lost the apartment, the New Year's Eve one when Ross and Monica did the dance, and when Phoebe tried to seduce Chandler. Hahahah. Funny.
Congratulations to Sylvia for surviving year one of law school aka "the car crash." We gonna have fuuuuun this summer!
Nothing much else to report. My life is boring. Won't you try to liven it up?

Dude. I got this off my brother's website, it's just so funny I need to share it too:
www.haroldandkumar.com-- click on trailer.
It's the website for a movie called "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle." It loooks so dumb, but SO funny. And the two leads are a Korean guy and an Indian guy. Also, Nei1 Patrick Harris (huge childhood crush) is in it. "Lapdaaaance." hahahahah!!! Oh man. I like me some silly movies.
I was at work last night till 10. BOOOO. Tonight I'll be working till around 9. But, I'll be staffing a big reception at a big law firm with lots of fancy schmancy guests. And lots of good food. I hope I see someone famous (and by famous I mean congressmen, senators or lawyers).
TV dilemna: at 9 tonight, it's the Dateline special on Friends, Angel, The Bachelor all at the same time!!! I think I'll tape Angel, watch the Friends thing and flip occasionally to The Bachelor. What a complicated life I lead.
Go Sharks! They're in the conference finals. Holllaaaa.
Hey Giants! What the hell is going on? Cmon! Start winning!

So I watched ER on Thursday, and both Danie1 Dae Kim and Archie Kao were on it. Hollla. They were both great. Daniel Kim is my buddy Gela's cousin, and Archie is on one of my favorite shows "CSI". Also, they're both pretty hot. Cheers to talented actors who happen to be Asian-American. (There are many others I would include in this list).
Lately, one of my favorite websites is imdb.com. It's a great time waster website. Some things I learned about Archie:
- He was the blue galaxy ranger (some Power Rangers spinoff I think)
- He was a Sigma Chi in college
- He's 30!! (talk about an example of Asians who age well).
Other things I've learned
- Gregg Ede1man ( from Wonderful Town) went to NU
- Lauryn Hi1l and Zach Bra.ff went to the same high school
- Shar1f Atk1ns (from ER), Zach Bra.ff and Kathryn Hahn (from How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton) were all at NU at about the same time.
- Robert Reed (dad from Brady Bunch) went to NU
- Laura 1nnes and Megan Mullally are good friends from when they met at NU.
- William Jennings Bryan, Adlai Stevenson and Jerry Springer are all NU Law School alums.
Basically, everyone and their momma went to NU. Hollllaaaaa.
It's just another Manic Monday. One that I found especially difficult to wake up for.
NYC Spent my weekend in New York! Hung out with the girls, ate plastic ice cream in Little Italy, stayed up late watching episodes of Friends on Friday night. Saturday spent the day in Greenwich Village, eating a lot, hanging out in Washington Square Park. Took lots of funny pictures with Jess at Lincoln Center, then walked around Central Park for a bit. Watched "Wonderful Town" on Saturday night. It was great-- Donna Murphy is brilliant and amazing. Her physicality and comic abilities are amazing. Gregg Ede1man is also great. The costumes were beautiful. Overall, really enjoyed this show.
So that was my New York weekend. I don't think I could ever live in New York, but I love visiting and taking it all in. And I really love the food.
Dude. A1ias. Lauren is still a bitch, Sloane is still muy evil, and Jack Bristown is still a huge ass kicker. Favorite line: "I think you're sexy Jack. Deal with it." Sydney's sister is cool, but I have a feeling she'll become evil. I mean, she is Sloane's daughter.
CICADAS!!!! The cicadas are coming!! Seriously, I'm so scared. Brood X, which emerges every 17 years, is emerging this summer. Probably soon. Hundreds of thousands of big, dumb, ugly, gross cicadas. They're saying 100 per tree. And they'll be around for months. Apparantely, they're really dumb, and fly everywhere and into things. Including people. If a cicada flies into me, watch out for girlish screaming, shrieking and arm flapping. BOO cicadas! I'm not going outside for the whole of May, June and part of July. Seriously.
It's already May! Crazy. I can't believe this year went by so fast. I graduated almost a year ago. Nutty.
