This is sick. Wake up world!

U.N. Study: Earth's Health Deteriorating
By CATHERINE McALOON, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Growing populations and expanding economic activity have strained the planet's ecosystems over the past half century, a trend that threatens international efforts to combat poverty and disease, a U.N.-sponsored study of the Earth's health warned on Wednesday.

The four-year, $24 million study — the largest-ever to show how people are changing their environment — found that humans had depleted 60 percent of the world's grasslands, forests, farmlands, rivers and lakes.

Unless nations adopt more eco-friendly policies, increased human demands for food, clean water and fuels could speed the disappearance of forests, fish and fresh water reserves and lead to more frequent disease outbreaks over the next 50 years, it said.

"This report is essentially an audit of nature's economy and the audit shows that we have driven most of the accounts into the red, if you drive the economy into the red ultimately there are significant consequences for our capacity to achieve our dreams in terms of poverty reduction and prosperity," Jonathan Lash, a member of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment board, said in London.

Walter Reid, director of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, said over the past 50 years humans had changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than any comparable period in human history.

"These changes have resulted in a substantial and largely irreversible loss to the biological diversity of the planet," Reid said.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan stressed that the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment "tells us how we can change course," and urged nations to consider its recommendations.

Earlier in the day at an event in Japan, A.H. Zakri, director of the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies, said eliminating trade barriers and subsidies, protecting forests and coastal areas, promoting "green" technologies and lowering greenhouse gas emissions thought to contribute to global warming could help to slow environmental degradation.

The study was compiled by 1,360 scientists from 95 nations who pored over 16,000 satellite photos from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and analyzed reams of statistics and scientific journals.

Their findings, announced in several cities worldwide, highlight the planet's problems at the end of the 20th century, as the human population reached 6 billion.

A fifth of coral reefs and a third of the mangrove forests have been destroyed in recent decades. The diversity of animal and plant species has fallen sharply, and a third of all species are at risk of extinction. Disease outbreaks, floods and fires have become more frequent. Levels of carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas — in the atmosphere have surged, mostly in the past four decades.
Conservation groups called on governments, businesses and individuals to heed the study's warnings.

"Ecosystems are capital assets. We don't include them on our balance sheets, but if we did the services they supply would dwarf everything else in value," said Taylor Ricketts, director of conservation science at World Wildlife Fund.

The report said degradation of ecosystems was a barrier to achieving development goals adopted at the U.N. Millennium Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2000: halving the proportion of people without access to clean water and basic sanitation by 2015 and improving the lives of 100 million slum dwellers by 2020.

The ecosystem assessment was designed by the U.N. Environment Program, the U.N. Development Program, the World Bank, the World Resources Institute, the Global Environment Facility and others. Governments, non-governmental organizations, foundations, academic institutions and the private sector also contributed their expertise.

Wow, leaving for Korea tomorrow. Crazy. I've gotten all the stuff on my work list done, so the rest of the day is going to be spent sneaking outside the enjoy the weather and any last minute things that come up. i just need to get through the rest of this day, go home and pack, and survive a gajillion hour plane flight. The idea of a vacation from work is making me feel joyous.

Things to do in Korea:
-eat
-try not to gain too much weight
-hang out with cousins
-see Gela
-play with baby cousins

In other news...

My NCAA bracket is looking okay. I'm currently fifth in my pool. Earlier this week, I was first! Until stinkin' Utah. I don't think any of the guys could believe it-- especially I filled the thing out in about five minutes, and have learned more about college basketball in the past week than I have the past season. This weekend, I almost had a heart attack watching the games. I don't think college basketball is good for my heart. It was really stressful, especially the freakin Illinois/Arizona game. I never thought I'd say this, but-- GO ILLINI!

Bought tickets yesterday to go to Orlando, Florida in May. Can't wait to spend some time with my girls Em and Byun. It'll be a good little vacation.

I still haven't heard from two law schools. Those bastards are really starting to piss me off.

Next time I write, it'll be from the motherland!

"Note, however, that we are justified by His grace. It is because of God's grace we are declared righteous before Him. We are all guilty before God-- condemned, vile, and helpless. We had no claim on God; the disposition of our case was wholly up to Him. He could with total justice have prounounced us all guilty, for that is what we were, and consigned us all to eternal damnation.... He owed us nothing, we owed Him everything.

But, because of His grace, God did not consign us all to hell; instead, He provided a remedy for us through Jesus Christ. Romans 3:25 says, "God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood." What is a sacrifice of atonement? A footnote of the New International Version gives an alternate reading of "the one who would turn aside his wrath, taking away sin."

The meaning of Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, then, is that Jesus by His death turned aside the wrath of God from us by taking it upon Himself. As He hung on the cross, He bore our sins in His body and endured the full force of God's wrath in our place.... By His death Jesus completely satisfied the justice of God, which required eternal death as the penalty for sin.

It is important that we notice who presented Christ as this sacrifice of atonement. Romans 3:25 says God presented Him. The whole plan of redemption was God's plan and was undertaken at God's intitiative. Why did He do this? There is only one answer: because of His grace. The atonement was God's extending favor to people who deserved not favor but wrath. The atonement was God's bridging the awful "Grand Canyon" of sin to reach people who were in rebellion against Him. And He did this at infinite cost to Himself by sending Jesus to die in our place."

Just something I read this morning while on the train... it really struck a chord with me today. Thought I'd share.

I am at work, and it's almost time to leave, and I am crawling out of my skin. I'm so jumpy. I think it's all the sugar I've eaten today. I've eaten a lot of sugar today because I've been craving chocolate all day. Ugh. When I go home, I'm going to work out A LOT.

Leaving for Korea a week from today! Crazy!

Been listening to the new Jars cd "RedemptiongSongs." It's great. They basically redid a lot of old hymns, and it's pretty great. I especially love "NothingButtheBlood," a collaboration with the BlindBoysofAlabama. It's rockin.

The UCs are torturing me. But whatever happens with them, looks like I'm going to end up in California next year no matter what. For reals.

I want to visit Chicago.

Yup. That's my boy!

So last night I got a phone call from the CByun. Whenever she calls, it's always interesting to see where she's calling from. Last night it was Florida. She's covering the TerriSchavo case and apparantely when she saw all the nutso fundamentalists, she thought of me. Isn't that sweet? This girl has gone everywhere and covered all the nuttiest stuff- from the Michael J. case to ScottPterson. And that cracks me up.

Today I drank my first ShamrockShake. It was tasty. Definitely only something I can drink once a year though. Hooray for green milkshakes!

How am I going to get through the rest of the day? I'm hitting a wall. Zzzzzzzzz...

Tournament update: Man o man o, stupid WakeForest SCREWED things up for my bracket. I had them going to the FinalFour! Dangit. Ah well. Such is MarchMadness eh?

Very chill weekend. My cold has actually gotten worse, so I stayed in and sletp on Friday night, almost all day Saturday and Saturday night. Thank heaven for Niquil!!

Does anyone have any good books to recommend for the big Korea trip? I need some good reads for the airplane.

Plan for this Sunday night: sleep, sleep and sleep. Sounds good to me!

I'm siiiick. Stupid sinus infection. Blah. There goes any St. Patrick's Day plans. Not like I had any. In fact, I'm not a big fan of St. Patrick's Day. I'm not Irish. I have no connection to Ireland. I don't know who St. Patrick is. It's just another way of praising and putting the white man's culture on a pedestal. No thanks.

Boy, I'm cranky. Can you tell?

So the tournament has started. I filled out my bracket, and I gotta say, I'm getting really into. I have obsessively checking the scores at work today. At the end of the day, I did pretty poorly. Hahah! Surprise surprise. Stupid Alabama. I had them going to the Sweet16. Also, stupid Iowa. I don't know why, but for some reason I decided go Big 10 and picked all of them to do well, not just Illinois. Ooops. We'll see how my bracket is looking by the end of the day, but I gotta say, I'm not optimistic.

Tired. Hungry. Gonna go find me some foooood.

First off, happy birthday to my girl Byun. Getting wiser and lovelier every day!

NCAA brackets came out. I need to start picking my choices. I usually go for the higher ranked school, or the school I have some personal connection to. Last year I picked all the number one seeds to go to the final four. hahahha. As you can tell, I'm not so great at this. I should follow the example of my roommate, who picks the schools whose mascot or colors she thinks is the cutest. She actually does really well every year. Much to the chagrin of those guys who spend hours and hours mulling and debating. Go with your instincts, that's what I say.

Meeting up with StacieChea tomorrow for lunch! Sweet!

My boss went to Tempe for a meeting, and caught some spring training games while she was there. She brought me back a sweeeet Giants spring training visor.

Speaking of Giants... whose excited about the upcoming season??!! I am!! My Giants are going to go all the way this year. I can feel it.

It's Friday! Hooray! This has been a very very boring week. I suppose I should be thankful about being able to relax and hang out, when pretty soon I'll have very little opportunity to do either.

Crazy: I got off the metro yesterday at Dupont, and I was walking I see someone walking towards me and saying my name. Who is it? A friend from NU who I haven't seen since graduation! She just got into town to visit a friend, and we just happened to run into each other. Small world. It was great to see her. Yay old friends :)

Hooray list for the week:
- Still in loooove with my i.pod.
- TV is awesome- Gilmore Girls, Alias, Without a Trace rock my world.
- No bosses today!
- Celebrating the birthdays of Suhan, Cy and Cbyun all in one week.
- Love my roommate, even though I'm the worst roommate ever.
- This week in God segment on the DailyShow is my favorite thing ever

Booooo list for the week:
- Still waiting
- I am an awful dieter
- No food in the apartment= not packing lunch= spending too much money.
- The high in Sunnyvale is supposed to be 84 today. There is a chance of snow showers in DC tomorrow. Man.

I have a crush.

On my blue mini i.pod.

We're still getting to know each other, but things are going well so far. I've been seeing what sort of cool things he can do, and thus far I am impressed.

I think I'm going to keep him. :)

Monday, March 07, 2005

Man, I love weekends. I wish they would never end. This weekend, Jess and I did a lot of walking, eating, drinking and vegging. It was pretty awesome.

I think the next couple weeks will be buuusy. Have to get a lot of stuff done at work before I leave for my big trip. And then when I get back, I have to start thinking about all the stuff I have to get organized and done before I quit work permanently. What a headache. Oy.

Backstre.et Boys are coming to DC! Should I go? Man, when I was in high school I LOVED them. I still have a place in my heart for them. But is it in me to really be THAT dorky. What kind of crowd will be at a Backstreet Boys concert?? We'll see. Man. I really am a huge dork.

You know my perspective has become highly skewed when it's 50 degrees outside and I'm basking the in the warmth and sunshine.

My I.pod is coming in the mail today! YAY!

Thursday, March 03, 2005

So as much as I love California and am desperate to go home and be near family again, there's a piece of me that also loves DC and will be sad to go. I love my church, I love this city, and I kind of want to stay out here longer to watch things grow and see things happen. I'd really like to stay out here another year... but could I handle staying out here three more years? I applied to some DC law schools just for the heck of it, confident that I would be moving back to sunshine and family. But now that the possibility exists for real that I could go to school out here, I'm a little torn. I suppose I should wait and see on other schools before I really get myself all worked up. Who knew this California girl would become so enamored with the East Coast?

I hate being in limbo!!!
