Hey! i had a great day today. we started our day out by heading down to chinatown and getting some dim sum. yum yum. then we headed up to tkts in times square to get show tickets... dude, we waited in line for like an hour and a half, and it was FREEZING. but worth it. picked up some show tickets for 50 bucks. nice.
after getting the tickets, we headed back down to soho and got coffee/hot chocolate. we had dinner in union square at a place called chat and chew-- yum yum.
then we went at watched the show. what show, you ask? FLOWER DRUM SONG!!!! hooray! flower drum song is a musical written in the 50s by rodgers and hammerstein, and is basically the only musical that expressly features asian american performers. it was made into a movie during the 60s or 70s featuring nancy kwon. anyways, here's my show review:
first of all, we had GREAT seats. 18th row orchestra. great view. this show was awesome. i was really impressed-- it was better than i thought it would be for some reason. the performances were all great. seriously, anyone who says that the reason asian americans are not in theater/movies/tv more are because there aren't enough talented AA performers can just eat ddong and then watch this show. the caliber of the actors and actresses was amazing. top to bottom, the acting, dancing and singing were all great. randall duk kim and jodi long, two veteran AA actors, were amazing. sandra allen as linda low was such an awesome triple threat. jose llana as Ta sings beautifully-- he can belt it!. and lea salonga. wow. lea salonga. she's an okay actress, but she is just an amazing singer. she has such a beautiful voice. i feel so lucky i got to see her live. the ensemble was good too-- one of the chicks, kim varhola, is an NU alum!
okay, the book was pretty good too. this is SUCH a rodgers and hammerstein musical-- hokey, formulaic, very sweet. david henry hwang managed to keep all the songs and some of the main themes of the original, but took all the odd stereotypes and used the songs/scenes to mock them and make a point out of it. the staging and new plot were pretty creative and fun to watch (the chop suey number-- ohman!), and thoughtful. he brought up some very interesting themes. so david henry hwang-- lots of exposition and monologue, very asian american male empowerment. seriously, he's all about empowering asian americans, and asian-american males in general. yes, all my asian american brothers out there, YOU ARE HOT!! and strong and manly and thoughtful and wonderful. : )
so, if you're ever in new york in the next couple months, go to see flower drum song. i would recommend it thoroughly.
also, i would just like to say that amateur night at the apollo is so stinking funny/sad. so stinkin' funny cause you can kinda tell when someone is gonna be baaaaad, and then when they just get their ass booed off the stage in the first couple of seconds, you just gotta laugh. but also sad, cause everyone and their mama is booing them.
ok, time to get to bed. i'm tiiired. and it's been a long day.
