I miss DC.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

I was at Patti's for women's group today, when I hear someone singing "Hit me with your best shot...."

I look down, and it's coming from Christine.

Christine is Patti's daughter.

Christine is 2.

She learned the lyric when her mom was singing it on karoake.

Thank goodness for little children, and thank goodness for the 80s.

How these people can proclaim to be Christian is beyond me:

Church: God Punishing GIs Over Gays

By BETH RUCKER, Associated Press Writer Sun Aug 28,10:16 AM ET

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.

he church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars' down a highway, waving flags and screaming "God bless America."

"My husband is over there, so I'm here to show my support," 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. "To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are."

The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you."

....

Now, most reasonable people know that these guys are extreme and crazy and nutty, and not a real church. But the fact that they even have "church" associated with them is just... well... argh.

God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.

Week 2 of law school is over. Week 1 flew by, week 2 crawled by. I'm enjoying everything so far, for the most part. My classmates are cool, and I figured out pretty much on the first day who was not cool and needed to avoid. I've met some nice people... but I don't think I've really made any friends. Maybe I just need more time? Maybe I just need to be more social? Hm. School wise, things are ok. A little overwhelming, but thus far manageable. How long the manageable will last remains to be seen.

Last night I did work, so today I went out to a Giants game! We beat the Mets! Yay! I'm really bummed they're doing so poorly this year, and really bummed they're trading all the vets away for these young guys. Although, they are mainly trading away pitchers who have been doing terribly this year. Our bullpen is atrocious. But I wish they wouldn't play rookies at the expense of my favorite players (ahem lance.niekro for jtsnow). But such is life.

The Panda Cam! See the new baby panda at the National Zoo. So cute. Love it.

Seen on a billboard in LA:

"God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts."

Amen.

So, I started orientation this week. It was tiring, but not so bad. My classmates seem pretty cool- no one really stood out as a massive tool. Am I the massive tool? I hope not. Anyways, classes start tomorrow. I'm excited... and a little scared. I hope I don't flunk out. I don't want to be that girl. I'll try as hard as I can to be a good student, in large part because I spent a hell of a lot of money on books, and it will not go to waste. Hopefully.

I have to go and do my homework now. And so it begins.

Cousins and the newlyweds in LA at the Chinese wedding banqet.

My sister and I just finished a bottle of wine, while watching "Miracle" on dvd. I'm inspired. And happy. Wine rocks. What a perfect way to end my summer. That's right. Orientation starts tomorrow. What the....? How is it already August?

It's my sister, James and I watching TV in James' room (Phil's old room.) It's just like old times. If only we had Phil and Jo. And more farting.

La laaa. Went to LA this weekend for Phil and Jo's chinese banquet reception thing. Man, LA is fun.... but traffic there seriously kills any desire I might have to live there. It's just atrocious. Anyways, on Friday night we went to Manna for all you can eat kalbi. It was so tasty delicious. But during the meal, we kept seeing these firemen walking around. We figured it was a surprise fire inspection. Well, after a while more and more firemen were walking around, people stopped coming in, and then they started kicking people out. The place had that many fire code violations. I guess all these violations would be bad in the case of a fire... but part of me thinks the food is worth it. Yum.

Saturday night was the chinese banquet. It was a nine course meal, and I ate a lot. My sister and I also finished off a bottle of BonnyDoone riesling between the two of us. Needless to say, Minsoo had two sisters in very good moods last night. It was good seeing Hyun and Brian, and Jo's family, and meeting so many of Jo's family friends.

Minsoo and Jo live in west LA, where they have their own grown up apartment. They have this cute, cozy little life together. I'm excited to see what the future holds for them. Congrats Phil and Jo! Wedding stuff is over, real married life has officially begun!

And now for me, fun times are coming to a close. Orientation starts Wednesday. RIP Summer of Weddings and Fun. It was great knowing ya.
