Why I think the recall election in California sucks:
Ok, I'm not the hugest fan of Gray Davis. Man has made some poor choices, and if there had been a better candidate in the last election, I may have voted for the other guy. Unfortunately, there was not a better candidate in the last election, and Gray Davis WON. That's right, he WON. He was elected by the voters of California. I think it's ridiculous that in the middle of a term, a bunch of people with too much money can decide to hell with that, we're gonna try again. He may not be doing the best job, but it's not all mismanagement-- a lot of it is circumstances. I think the whole recall drive reeks of Republican bitterness and a disregard for the best interests of California.
I am concerned that the recall election will not adequetly reflect the interests in Californians. Look at it this way: it's a lot easier to get millions of people sign a petition than actually go out and vote. You can barely get 50 percent participation in something as important as a presidential election. The fact of the matter is, it is difficult for many people to take the time to vote, whether because they can't find the time to get off work, or they're tired from a long day, or they're just lazy. I'm afraid the people who end up voting will represent a small, impassioned, embittered fraction of the California voting public.
Also, if those who so passionately support recalling Davis really cared about the interests of the state and not their own personal agendas, they probably wouldn't be making a state that is already in financial trouble spent tens of millions of dollars on a recall election that might not do anything and that California probably could be spending on something more productive-- I don't know, schools? crime prevention? Also, they would probably care that they are making embarrassing the state. I am embarassed to be part of a state that has people who would put vendettas and party politics ahead of its citizens, tries to buy a new governer in the middle of a term, and and doesn't care that they are making a laughing stock out of the state.
That's right, a laughing stock. After all the trouble to recall Davis and put a new governor in, look who's in the race. Let's see: Arianna Huffington, Bill Simon (who lost to Davis last election), Richard Riordan, Gary Coleman and Larry Flynt. The top candidate is Arnold, a man who has never held any public office. It may be novel, but really, what is his stance on immigration? Gun control? Education? Spending? How he plans to balance the budget and decrease the deficit? Don't know? Neither does anyone else. Not to mention, should we really someone with no experience and no demonstrated knowledge of any policy issues to govern a state? I think he's just a name and a recognizable face-- not much substance. The fact that the Republicans have not offered a viable candidate who would be a marked improvement from Governor Davis shows me that they don't really care who the Governor is, just as long as it's not Gray. They don't care about who would do the best job, who would best represent the interests of the state, and who the voters chose, they just can't stand the fact that they didn't win in the last election. Seriously, I would be a lot less bitter about this they had presented a viable, serious replacement for Governor Davis. The fact that they didn't really tells me that they were not thinking far ahead and not thinking beyond their bitterness and hard feelings. It's embarassing.
Honestly, I think Davis has made a lot of mistakes. But placing the blame on one man ignores the fact that many people/factors are always involved, that there are always other players and circumstances that need to be accounted for. This recall election is a joke, and it's making California into a big joke as well.
So those are my feelings. I just needed to get that out. And since it's my blog, I can say whatever i want!!!
