Tonight I went to a scholarship dinner. While I'm extremely grateful for the scholarship and think the organization is great, their banquet was NUTSO. It opened with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. The lady sang it well, but she sang it soooo slowly. After the long ass opening remarks, they served dinner and provided "entertainment." The entertainment was in reality middle aged Asian people singing karaoke style, belting out Vietnamese standards and classics like "You are the Sunshine of My Life." Sometimes a little offkey, and mainly really really loudly. They also Chinese fan dancers, and Indian classical dancer and a Tahitan dancer. Oh, and througout all the performances and during all the speeches, there was a low to mid level buzz of chatter... the crowd was just talking away the whole time. Didn't matter if it was a dancer or CongressmanMikeHonda, they just kept talking away at their tables and not paying attention. Sarah and I left right after I got my check, and unfortunately missed the fashion show.
It was a total nutball night. Luckily, Sarah's banquet in three weeks is a lot more sedate. No karoake. No fashion show. Just schmoozing and eating.
